What changes between single-zero and double-zero roulette?
European roulette uses the numbers 1–36 plus one green 0, for 37 possible pockets. American roulette adds a separate green 00, producing 38 pockets. OLG PlaySmart describes the single-number chance as 1 in 37 on the European wheel and 1 in 38 on the American wheel. The numbered red and black pockets do not change; the extra result is the second green zero.
That makes the wheel label more informative than the game's artwork or speed. Before comparing a live table, automated wheel or online version, look for 0 or 0 and 00 in the layout and then read the table-specific rules. A name such as European or American is helpful, but the visible wheel and published paytable provide the direct comparison.
Probability and house edge at a glance
On a single-zero wheel, a chosen straight-up number occupies one of 37 pockets: about 2.70%. On a double-zero wheel it occupies one of 38: about 2.63%. For an even-money red/black, odd/even or high/low wager, 18 numbered pockets win. That is 18/37, about 48.65%, on the single-zero wheel and 18/38, about 47.37%, on the double-zero wheel.
OLG gives the standard house edge as 2.70% for European roulette and 5.26% for American roulette. Those percentages are long-run mathematical comparisons for the standard wagers, not forecasts for one spin or one session. Roulette payout chart: what a winning C$10 bet returns
A straight-up win pays 35:1 under OLG's published roulette payout guide. With an illustrative C$10 stake, that is C$350 profit plus the returned C$10 stake, for C$360 total. An even-money win pays 1:1: C$10 profit plus the returned stake, for C$20 total. A dozen or column pays 2:1, or C$20 profit and C$30 total on the same example.
These winning amounts are the same on the standard single-zero and double-zero examples. The important difference is how often the wager can win because the denominator changes from 37 to 38. Do not read a 35:1 payout as a 35-in-1 probability; it is the profit ratio after the selected result wins.
How the extra 00 changes the mathematical cost
For standard wagers with the published payout ratios, the 2.70% single-zero house edge corresponds to about C$0.27 per C$10 wager in long-run mathematical expectation. The 5.26% double-zero edge corresponds to about C$0.53 per C$10. The difference is about C$0.26 per C$10 wagered, even though a winning red bet or straight-up number shows the same payout ratio.
This is an expected-value illustration, not a fee deducted from each spin. Any individual wager either settles according to the table rules or loses; the displayed balance does not subtract twenty-seven or fifty-three cents. Over a small number of spins, results can be far above or below the mathematical average.
Which bets and table rules should you identify?
Inside bets cover particular numbers and offer larger payout ratios: OLG lists 35:1 for one number, 17:1 for two, 11:1 for three, 8:1 for four and 5:1 for six. Outside bets cover broader groups: red/black, odd/even and high/low pay 1:1, while dozens and columns pay 2:1. European roulette can also display French announced wagers such as voisins du zéro, tiers and orphelins. Their availability depends on the casino's house rules. Record the exact wheel, bet name, covered pockets and payout before comparing two products; the same general roulette label does not guarantee the same menu of wagers.
A practical roulette comparison for Canada
Start with the applicable provincial product, then open the actual roulette game and count its green pockets. Note whether the title and wheel agree, confirm the payout table, and keep the stake, profit and total return as separate amounts. For online games, also record the provider and game version so the observation can be checked again later.
